Matte black porcelain with a single fine gold line at the rim. The glaze is flat rather than glossy, which is what stops black tableware looking like plastic under candlelight — it absorbs the light and lets the gold do the reflecting.

Dinner plates, side plates and bowls, banded to match. Built to sit with dark linen and darker glass rather than to be noticed on its own.

Why matte, not gloss

Gloss gives the game away.

A shiny black surface throws back every light in the room in hard spots, and that is the thing that makes black tableware look cheap. A flat glaze does not do it.

The glaze absorbs and the gold reflects. Split the job between the two and candlelight has exactly one place to catch. That is the whole design, and it only works because the black stays quiet.

The restraint

One band, one colour, three shapes.

Nothing on the face of the plate, so whatever you serve arrives on an empty dark field rather than into a pattern it has to compete with.

Built to sit with other things. Dark linen under it, darker glass beside it. This is a service designed to be the ground of a table rather than the subject of it.

The service

Three shapes, one line.

Dinner plates, side plates and bowls, banded to match.

01

Dinner plates

The main course, on an unbroken dark field. The gold band draws the edge of the setting, so the plate still has an outline in low light.

02

Side plates

Bread, a first course, or the plate that sits to the left all evening doing nothing but holding the shape of the setting.

03

Bowls

Banded to match the plates. Soup, pasta, anything that needs a wall rather than a rim to hold it.

04

One gold line

The same fine band runs on every shape, which is what makes three different objects read as one service on the table.

The same fine gold band runs on every shape.

The black stays quiet so the gold can speak.

On the table

What it is for.

A dark table by candlelight

Charcoal linen under it, darker glass beside it. The gold band draws the edge of each setting so the table still has an outline in low light.

Something pale, plated

Fish, pasta, a light sauce. Anything pale gains a great deal of contrast on an unbroken dark field.

A dark braise on a dark plate loses some. It is a table that rewards thinking about what you put on it.

Questions

Before you order.

Exactly how many pieces come in the box?

It is sold as a service for four, made up of dinner plates, side plates and bowls. We do not publish a piece-by-piece count beyond that, and we would rather say so than print a number we cannot stand behind. Ask us and we will confirm before you order.

What are the diameters?

We do not have measured dimensions for these three shapes, so there is no size row in the specification. The photographs show the proportion of plate to bowl in a real setting, which is the honest version of the answer.

Dishwasher and microwave?

We do not publish a rating for either, and a metallic rim is exactly the detail you would want confirmed rather than assumed. Treat it as unrated until we can tell you otherwise.

Will black plates make food look odd?

They change what flatters. Anything pale, such as fish, pasta or a light sauce, gains a great deal of contrast. A dark braise on a dark plate loses some. It is a table that rewards thinking about what you put on it.

How will the colour look in my room?

It was photographed under warm low light. A matte black glaze is difficult to reproduce on a screen and will look flatter or bluer depending on the display you are reading this on.
