The house idea
A table is not lit by a ceiling.
It is lit by what you put on it.
Clyro is built on one observation: almost nothing looks like itself under a bright white kitchen light. Crystal goes flat. Gold goes brassy. A sauce turns grey. Everything worth owning has been photographed, glazed and chosen for a room that is half dark — because that is the room people actually eat in.
So the house works in two things at once. Dark is the ground: near-black porcelain, blackened brass, charcoal linen, matte enamel, wax the colour of soot. It absorbs the room and gives everything else an edge to stand against. Light is what moves across it: a candle flame, a cream enamel interior, a gilt rim catching as a plate is set down, the single scarlet stem in a rack of clear glass.
Neither one is the point on its own. A table dressed entirely in black is a mood board. A table dressed entirely in light is a canteen. The whole craft is the meeting — which is why nearly every piece in this house is one dark object carrying one bright detail, and why they all sit together without ever having been sold as a matching set.
The ground
Dark, and matte
Satin glazes and blackened metal rather than gloss and chrome. Matte holds a shadow instead of throwing back the room, so the object keeps its shape after the sun goes down.
The movement
Light, and low
Candlelight sits below eye level and travels upward, which is the most flattering direction there is — for a face, for a glass, and for the rim of a plate.
The exception
One colour that isn't neutral
A house of greys becomes a hotel. There is one scarlet running through this one — in a stem, in wine, in the thread of the label — and it is the only colour allowed to interrupt.
